CHAPTER FIFTY-ONE

By the time we staggered out of the bar, I had consumed a little more alcohol than I was used to and I wasn’t sure if I could walk straight. Daniel had drunk a similar amount, but he appeared to be handling it far better and he took my arm and cradled it up against his.

“I think we should get coffee and cake, like we did in New York the last time we were together. Then, unless you’d like to come back to mine, I shall escort you to your hotel, milady.” Daniel spoke with an attempt at a British accent, which soon had me giggling again. It wasn’t very good and was obviously an American trying to be British, but he appeared to be aware of it at least.

As we made our way back down the street, I was thankful for how much later it was and that there were far fewer people about. No one had bothered us in the bar, just as Daniel had said, but I feared that his fans might flock around us again and I would be forced to let go of the man guiding me and keeping me from wobbling too much.

Thankfully, we didn’t have to go too far before there was a coffee shop. It was a big chain brand, and both of us preferred the independent ones, but it was also better than nothing at this time of night. Daniel found us a table near the back this time and left me to sit there and try to sober a little while he ordered.

Despite being more vulnerable, I felt surprisingly safe and I could only assume it was why I hadn’t hesitated to drink so much. This was okay. I didn’t have to be on my guard all the time. Daniel listened to me, respected me and had let me know on more than one occasion that my comfort and safety was important to him.

It was easy to be calm around him, even knowing the sorts of things he did to me when I was naked and at his mercy, or he wanted to exercise a little control from a distance. He’d never pushed me hard, even if he’d encouraged me to test my own boundaries. It gave me a safe place to push boundaries as far as I wanted to, knowing he would go with me, but that he would stop as soon as I wanted to draw a line again.

Now he was taking care of me, finding food and coffee and making sure that I got to the next place without problem. I had found someone I felt safe with.

At this time of night, the coffee shop wasn’t that busy, probably helped by this not being New York city and us being a little off the main street and Daniel was soon with me again. He’d ordered me a donut without me having to remind him which ones I liked the most and I fell in love with him a little more.
